"The role of government is to provide for the
common good and protect the vulnerable. Essential public services
include education, health and social services, environmental protection,
transportation, and community safety. We should provide these services
within the context of a healthy market system which works best when
true competition exists, citizens can choose among competitors,
and government regulation is adequate to insure competition but is
not unnecessarily burdensome. I favor paying for essential services
with non-regressive taxes and focusing on prevention and early intervention
rather than waiting for a crisis."
